Chapter Twenty-Six

The day outside was dull and grey when Anderson returned to the empty ICU room. The blood was still on the floor and up the walls. Anderson took her usual seat in the corner of the room, her eyes staring at the pool of crimson. Awful flashbacks of what had been there that night haunted her mind. Suddenly, the door opened, and Nurse Hunter stepped in.

“Are you alright, doctor?” he asked, glancing too at the pool of blood.

“It doesn’t matter about me,” Anderson answered, “is Barney alright?”

“Well, the surgery went well last night, but I don’t know if this accident will affect… his time left,” Hunter answered solemnly.

Anderson’s mind didn’t take long to comprehend what Hunter just said, she was terrified this incident could have shortened Barney’s time left further before the poisoning finally claimed his life.

“I came to find you, they’ve moved Barney to another room, closer to theatre,” Hunter said, beckoning for Anderson to follow him. “In case of another emergency.”

Anderson was hesitant but did eventually stand and followed Hunter to Barney’s new room. Hunter left her at the room’s door and continued on his way to another floor. Anderson could hear the loud beeping of the heart monitor coming from behind the door. She took a deep breath and gently pushed the door open.

The room was just as dull and lifeless as Anderson had expected it to be. She tried her best to keep her emotions under control. She kept her head down and her gaze to the floor, trying to avoid seeing what state the incident had left Barney in. Once her knee hit the side of the bed, Anderson inhaled deeply and raised her head.

She felt her heart shatter at the sight of Barney’s horrible state, a bandage was wrapped around his right arm and a blood transfusion attached to his left. Anderson slowly knelt before the bed, still staring at Barney’s pale face. Anderson cried for a few seconds when something happened.

Barney suddenly started gasping, as if he couldn’t breathe. His back arched and his body began shaking violently. The gasps suddenly changed into gags as foaming saliva began to pour from Barney’s mouth.

“NURSE!” Anderson screamed, leaping to her feet. “NURSE HUNTER!”

Hearing his name, Hunter dashed back towards the room and smashed the door open. Anderson looked at him as he entered, a heart full of fear and worry.

“Get him into the recovery position, Anderson, I’ll go get help,” Hunter said frantically.

Hunter dashed out the door, leaving Anderson alone. She gently rolled Barney over into the recovery position and waited for Hunter’s return, Anderson was almost in tears to see what was happening in front of her. Barney’s eyelids were flickering, while his eyes were rolling back into his head.

Hunter returned with 2 nurses, one holding an oxygen mask and the other holding cleaning cloths. Anderson beckoned for the nurses to get to work and they obeyed, Hunter assisting Anderson with keeping Barney in the recovery position.

The nurses worked together to clean the foaming saliva from Barney’s mouth and placed the oxygen mask over his face.
